3/22/2011 - Breakfast Yitzchak Style

We awoke at Sheila and Yitzchak's house and, after showering, had coffee before Sheila went to work.

I was checking emails and smelled a wonderful smell that drew me to the kitchen.  On the stove was a fry pan with olive oil, peppers, onions, garlic and the top of leeks.  After stirring it and letting it steam with the lid on, the onions and peppers were soft.  Yitzchak and Gary went to the market and got a bunch of tomatoes and a few loaves of freshly baked bread.  When they returned, Allan and Suzan were awake and Yitzchak put Suzan to work slicing the many tomatoes.  Yitz seasoned the onions/pepper mixture with salt, pepper, Corcum (turmeric) and paprika and added some more olive oil before layering on the sliced tomatoes.  Between each step he put the lid on the pan so that the contents would steam.  Finally, Yitz topped the vegetable mixture with more seasoning and oil and then broke several eggs into the pan so that they would poach atop the vegetables.  Yitz called this Shakshouka.  I call it delicious.

We sat on the back porch and ate our Shakshouka with the fresh bread.  What a treat!

Sheila had done a load of our wash so we hung it on the clothes line in the backyard.  I haven't done that since I was a kid - it was great to have clothes dried in the fresh air.
